For the month of September, we're cutting out certain food groups that could be having a negative impact on your health.
How do you know if these foods are affecting you or not?
By cutting them out of your diet completely
then reintroducing them after 30 days.
YES: Real food.
We'll be eating whole, unprocessed foods that have either no ingredients listed because they're already a whole food, or if coming from a jar/package, all pronounceable ingredients.
- Meat
- Seafood
- Eggs
- Tons of vegetables
- Moderate amounts of fruit
- Plenty of healthy fats from avocado, coconut, and some nuts/seeds .
NO: Avoid for 30 days
- Sugar of any kind (including honey, maple syrup, agave, coconut sugar, Splenda, Equal, Nutrasweet, xylitol, stevia, etc. Read labels!)
- Alcohol (even for cooking)
- Grains
- Legumes
- Dairy
- Processed foods
- Carrageenan, MSG, or sulfites (check ingredient lists)
I have led clients through the Whole30 program and have also experienced it myself. Out of all the programs I've tried, I've enjoyed this one the most because...
- it's realistic
- almost anyone can do it
- and the habits you form during these 30 days can have long-term effects.
Benefits
(from whole30.com):
- Doing a program like this will change many things: the way you think about food, your tastes, habits and cravings, and even the emotional relationship you have with food and with your body.
- More than 95% of participants lose weight and improve body composition without counting or restricting calories
- Other common side effects include high energy levels, improved athletic performance, better sleep, improved focus and mental clarity
- Many report effectively changing long-standing, unhealthy habits related to food, developing a healthier body image, and a dramatic reduction or elimination of cravings, particularly for sugar and carbohydrates
Testimonials
“After doing the 30 day challenge, I lost 13 pounds, but the best part is I’ve been able to keep the weight off, just by sticking with some of the fundamental changes. Another eye opener for me was just how much sugar I was eating. I had sugar withdrawals and felt awful, but experiencing that was even more of a reason to stick with it and break my sugar addiction”
“The day after the Super Bowl I committed, along with my wife, to the Whole 30. The day before I had a full day of gluttony - beer, chips, dips, fried foods, etc., and it was the good life, or so I thought...
On our challenge, were counseled by Erica in so many areas of nutrition, eventually encouraging to begin our journey by reading the book “It Starts with Food.” After 3-4 chapters, I began to realize how ignorant I had been to all matters relating to nutrition. Learning how the right foods can maximize our body’s metabolism, and thereby improving my overall health was very encouraging. Having just turned 60, I realized now was the time to really get serious about my diet.
After the first two weeks I began to lose weight and my clothes started fitting better. The real bonus has been all the new energy. I used to feel flat at the end of the day. No longer. Seems I have another gear once the clock hits 5:00.
Getting the right minerals, vitamins, and fats and proteins has now taken center stage. I enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as greens to go along with the right amount of animal protein. An added plus is that my taste buds have come alive. Bell peppers, squash, and string beans actually taste good to me now.
When I began the challenge I was 194 pounds, and after six months I’m now at 174. I told my wife I’m never going back to my old ways of eating!”
“The best part about doing the 30 day challenge, besides learning about all the health benefits, was that I felt great and looked great! Also, my biggest improvement was in my sleep! I now no longer have trouble sleeping, and that makes me want to continue eating healthy. My cooking also improved 100%. I was looking forward to every dish every day, and so was my husband. Our tastes also changed, and we found new, vibrant flavors in our food. We discovered a new way of eating, it was fabulous!”
